1 in 2 – Half of all individuals with disabilities get no physical activity (CDC).
Access to athletic opportunities is a given for able bodied individuals, but individuals with disabilities are often left out of this common experience.
We knew from the start that we wanted our son Ben to experience the same adventures every child deserves—the chance to grow in confidence, feel included, and discover what’s possible.
Ben is 7 years old and has Down syndrome. This winter, he will begin his fourth ski season. Along the way, he has skied slopes we never imagined, paddled across lakes, gone horseback riding, rock climbed, practiced archery, and now rides a bike fully on his own.
What makes this possible is the power of community—a community that sees Ben for who he is, not by what he can or cannot do. In an inclusive environment, he thrives. The benefits are endless: physical strength, social connection, sensory growth, psychological confidence, and, most importantly, joy.
Being outdoors, challenging limits, and exploring nature in a safe and supportive space has opened countless doors for Ben.
Out of this experience, we created Mile High Shredders—a nonprofit dedicated to giving back to our community and expanding these opportunities for others with Down syndrome.
Thank you for believing that adventure should be for everyone. Thank you for helping us make the outdoors a place of possibility, belonging, and joy. Because of you, the journey continues—and the best adventures are still ahead.
